More Lion Cubs Bred to Live in Cages

Along with White Tiger Cubs the Zoo Produced Via Incestual Inbreeding

Nine-year old lioness Kavitha has delivered three cubs at the Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Vandalur and zoo officials are pinning hopes that the new cubs along with the white tiger cubs would draw more visitors to the zoo.

The cubs are quarantined from the lion safari and are receiving the best attention from animal keepers and veterinarians, zoo director and chief conservator of forests K. S. S. V. P. Reddy in a statement said on Saturday.

According to zoo sources, the mother and three cubs are provided a cave like structure with minimal lighting to ensure that the animals are free from any stress and human intrusion. The sex of the cubs can be ascertained only after two weeks.

The lactating mother is provided nutritious diet including seven kg of beef, along with chicken and liver. With the birth of three cubs, the lion population in the zoo has reached 24 four including 12 males and 9 females.

Sources also said that the zoo has witnessed a steady increase in the number of people visiting the park when compared to previous year. As many as 1.16 lakh more footfalls have been recorded this year. So far 6.63 lakh public have visited the zoo.

Zoo sources also maintained that the animal adoption programme has brought in an additional revenue of Rs 23 lakh to the zoo, when compared to the previous fiscal.
